2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Is A Smooth And Effortless Operator

Four years in the market were enough for Mercedes-Benz to give the GLC a facelift.

The successor of the GLK debuted in its updated form at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, and you may not be able to tell it from the pre-facelift model at first glance, there are some styling changes.

The BMW X3 and Audi Q5 rival features a grille similar to the larger GLE, as well as new LED headlights with incorporated DRLs and LED taillights. Mercedes has also refreshed the AMG Line’s range of wheels and that’s where the novelties on the outside end, as Benz wanted to make sure that it doesn’t mess around with a winning recipe. After all, the GLC is their most successful high-riding vehicle.

The infotainment system may look outdated to the untrained eye, but it is the new MBUX system, although without the double-screen layout featured by newer Mercs. Other changes include a new multifunction touchpad added to the center console and a redesigned steering wheel. The 2020 GLC also be ordered with the optional 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster to make it feel livelier, but if you’re looking for a trim level that’ll make you feel special, then the AMG Line should be on your list.

This GLC 200d AMG Line gets the sportier exterior makeover, 19-inch alloy wheels, tinted rear windows, flat-bottom steering wheel wrapped in leather and heated leather seats. There’s also a sports suspension that makes it feel grippier around corners without sacrificing the ride quality too much, and the 161 HP 2.0-liter turbodiesel that’s paired to a 9-speed auto makes for a smooth driving experience and almost effortless overtakings.

Overall, the latest GLC is a very good premium compact SUV, albeit with a rather steep price tag that’s expected from a vehicle in this class: around €48,000 ($53,000) for the base model in Ireland, where the following review took place, or almost €60,000 ($66,000) for a better equipped example like this one.
